Name: Surface, Sub-surface Exploration and Laboratory Investigation for Kurichhu Hydropower Plant, Augmentation Project, Mongar
Name of the Client: Druk Green Power Corporation, Thimphu

Project description: Subsurface Geotechnical Investigation is done in Deciphering the type of underground geology and shall help Demarcate the excavation limits for the components. This is also done to help optimize the design of the components along with design of adequate support system and defining the design of the components along with design of adequate support system and defining of the construction methodology for the same.

Scope of work: Geological settings of the project area and its vicinity, Geological conditions related to the site selection, characteristics of foundation materials and their properties, Geotechnical design parameters for the project area, availability of suitable construction materials, Depth of bedrock or thickness of overburden and weathering limits, Types of litho logical units present in the foundation, Characteristics of significance geological and structural features such bedding/foliation, joints, fissures, folds, faults, shear zones, dykes, cavities and their influence on structural stability of the foundation; Permeability of the strata, depth of water table and slope stability. The investigation listed below are performed:
1) Sub-Surface investigations (Dore Drilling)
2) In situ water pressure tests in rocks
3) Laboratory investigation
4) Geophysical investigations.

Subsurface investigations are conducted using surface invasive techniques, principle along with the following:

• Rotary core drilling
• Ground water studies
• In-Situ Permeability testing
• In Situ Testing for determining geotechnical properties
